Are Composite Dental Fillings Right for You?

Posted .

In the past, a person with a cavity had very few options when it came to fillings. However, dentistry is a very dynamic field of medicine, and patients find themselves with more options than ever before. Fillings are no different.

If the tooth that needs repair is one that others can easily see, you might want to consider using a composite filling. A composite filling is a mixture of acrylic resin and powdered glass. It can be shaded to match the rest of your tooth, making it virtually unnoticeable to other people. Because it is a resin, the composite can also be molded to restore the shape of your tooth. Composite fillings are effective since they bond themselves directly to your tooth enamel, however they work best for teeth that do not receive a great deal of pressure when you bite or chew.

First, the dentist will remove any decay, and then clean and dry your tooth. After finding the right shade of resin for your tooth, the dentist will begin applying the resin in layers. Each of those layers are hardened with a special light after they are applied. With proper care, your fillings can last over five years.

Once your fillings are in place, you will need to continue to brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, and floss once a day. Your fillings can stain, so you should limit your intake of dark-colored foods and drinks. In addition to brushing and flossing, remember to see your dentist at least twice a year for your regular cleanings and exams. Your dentist will be able to remove the plaque and tartar from your teeth, and can check for other problems in your mouth. At that time he will evaluate your fillings to make sure that they do not need to be replaced.
