Keeping Your Smile Bright After a Whitening Treatment

Posted .

At Lighthouse Dental & Orthodontics, our dentist Dr. Samuel Richey, is proud to offer whitening treatments to his patients in the Riverton, Utah, area. While the process of teeth whitening is quick and easy, maintaining that gleam in your smile will take a little effort.

Remember that there are some foods and drinks that can take the shine off of your teeth. Those tomatoes in your pasta sauce contain acid, which will help the red color stick to your teeth. Before the pasta, why not enjoy a salad first? Make sure your salad contains broccoli, spinach and kale. Those vegetables will leave a protective layer on your teeth which will make it easier to brush the sauce stains away. Apples, cauliflower and celery will help keep curry from staining your teeth. Speaking of fruit, if you enjoy berries as a healthy snack or dessert, why not have some hard cheese with them? The cheese will help scrub your teeth. Wash it all down with a glass of water.

Coffee and tea will stain your teeth. Colas and dark-colored sodas not only stain your teeth, but contain acids that will allow other stains to adhere to your teeth as well. Red wine can discolor your teeth, and the acids in white wine can also damage and darken your teeth.

Of course, at the heart of it all is keeping up with your oral hygiene routine. You should continue to brush at least twice day for two minutes at a time with a fluoride toothpaste. A toothpaste formulated to whiten your teeth will also help. You should floss your teeth before going to bed each night, and continue to see Dr. Richey for your regular cleanings and exams.
